What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive healing practice that promotes balance and well-being in body, mind, emotions and spirit. It is an invitation to wellness. Reiki began as a spiritual practice to improve and maintain health; to cultivate peace of mind and to enhance our vitality and well-being. The Reiki Ideals (Gokai) were guidelines for living a compassionate life and daily self-Reiki was the foundation of caring for ourselves.
Reiki is a healing method that anyone can learn regardless of age. It can be used on anyone or anything – yourself, people, pets, even plants! As you use this healing method you may experience subtle changes in yourself. You will develop a new sense or awareness of the energy as it flows through your hands. And as you utilize the Reiki it will become stronger.
Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is a healing modality that originated in Japan in the early 1900’s. Reiki has its roots in ancient Buddhism and Shintoism and is part of the Chinese Qigong family.[1] It can be used for relaxation, stress relief and to promote healing and psychological well-being. Reiki was discovered in 1922 by Mikao Usui and is administered by a practitioner who places their hands on or near the client's body in a series of hand positions. During the treatment the practitioner acts as a channel for the Reiki energy as it flows through them to the recipient. It is important to note that the Ki energy or Reiki is guided by spiritual consciousness and not directed by the practitioner. You may find yourself working on one area of the body and sense the energy traveling to another affected area at the same time. This is not uncommon as Reiki flows to the area most in need of healing.
Reiki has been used for a variety of physical, mental and emotional issues with amazing results and is one of the few forms of healing that can by used to heal oneself. Reiki does not interfere with traditional medical treatment, but rather, enhances the body's innate (or natural) ability to heal itself and provides a source of restoring energy while one is ill, under medical treatment, or in recovery. When it is combined with the sincere desire of the client, who is willing to effect a healing or balancing within their emotional and spiritual consciousness, a total healing can occur.
Perhaps one of the most attractive aspects of Reiki is its simplicity. Level 1 and Level 2 can each be learned in just one day. Reiki can be practiced any moment, anytime, anywhere for on-the-spot stress release, pain relief and quick energy. It is not tied to any religion or philosophy and does not require any form of spiritual training. It is a holistic self-help technique for connecting with the life force energy within ourselves. No special environment or equipment is needed and age makes no difference. By following steps taught by a trained Reiki Master Teacher, anyone can access the energy of Reiki to meet their individual needs.
It is important to remember that while Reiki is safe to use in any situation, under no circumstances is it a substitute for professional medical care - EVER.
